Cecil Lue-Hing

Dr. Cecil Lue-Hing (1930–2026) earned his Doctor of Science degree in Environmental and Sanitary Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis in 1966 and became one of the most influential environmental engineers of his generation. During his distinguished career, he led pioneering advances in wastewater treatment, water quality improvement, nutrient management, environmental protection, and public infrastructure. His twenty-eight years as Director of Research and Development at the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago helped shape modern environmental engineering practice and improve the quality of waterways serving millions of people.

A member of the National Academy of Engineering, former President of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, recipient of numerous national honors, and longtime member of the EECE Advisory Board at Washington University, Dr. Lue-Hing was widely respected for his technical excellence, visionary leadership, commitment to public service, and dedication to mentoring future generations of engineers. His contributions continue to shape the environmental engineering profession and the communities it serves.

Join us on Friday afternoon, August 28, 2026, EECE will be hosting a memorial sympsoium in honor the extraordinary life and legacy of Dr. Cecil Lue‑Hing and his scientific contributions to water research. Lunch will be provided to those registered for the event.
